How we estimate running costs
Running costs are a ballpark, and we would rather be upfront about the math than pretend it is precise. Each car's annual estimate covers insurance, maintenance, tires, and storage as a percentage of its value: around 2.5 to 3 percent for EVs and everyday performance cars, 3.5 to 4 percent for sports and muscle cars, and 5 to 6 percent for supercars and hypercars. Cars from the 60s through the 90s get a premium on top, because specialist labor and rare parts cost real money. Value above $2 million counts at half rate, since insurance keeps scaling with value but a service bill does not. Every car has a floor of $1,500 per year, because even a cheap toy needs insurance. The income line uses a common enthusiast rule of thumb: keep your toy cars under half your gross annual income, and their running costs under 10 percent of it.
